Appleton DHU

Appleton DHU was the eye-catcher of the Cambridge Stallion Parade 2010. He combines superior conformation with excellent movement and superb dressage and show jumping ability. Appleton is a true gentleman, both in looks and behaviour.  

Appleton DHU was licensed by NZWHA in 2009. He was described by the judges as follows: "Appleton DHU impressed with his calm outlook and jumping ability. He will be an asset to the NZWHA stallion list."

At the Horse of the Year show, 2008 in Hastings, Appleton DHU became overall Champion Young Performance Bred Horse Of the Year. As a winner of the 'Three Year Old Performance Bred Horses' and the 'Colt as Sire of Performance Bred Horses', he stole the heart of many in the audience. Appleton, with his excellent exterior, showing a lot elasticity in his movement, was the stallion of choice of the European jury. A comment from Luc van Puymbroeck, one of the jurors: "I was really surprised by your stallion Appleton DHU because he was amazing: without discussion, he was the best horse of the show, congratulations."

Appleton DHU is the stallion of choice when you want to improve both dressage and show jumping ability.

We have good news for breeders: Economic times have been tough for all of us, and we felt that we could bring a foal of Appleton within reach of more breeders if we revised our breeding conditions.
We are now offering a service of Appleton for $850.- per insemination, instead of the old $2200.- for a LFG.

Practically this means that you are paying now on a 'per insemination' basis, instead of a per 'life foal' basis.
If you can present a mare from which you can expect a good fertility (like one with a good breeding record, or a young or even maiden one), you have a good chance that you get your mare in foal from one insemination only.

The stallion Appleton DHU was born in 2005 in the Netherlands, out of the mare Michigan (Burggraaf x World Cup I). He has an obvious dressage and show jumping background. His sire Rousseau (1998) had proven himself in the KWPN performance test and subsequent dressage competitions. He produced the Champion of the KWPN stallion show for three years running (2006-2008). 

Originally, because of his superb pedigree, his breeders (AHM Bakker-Brom from Gendt, the Netherlands) wanted to raise him for the KWPN stallion selection (Royal Dutch Sporthorse Studbook), but Nicole Bours and Ane Visser from Dutch Horses Unlimited managed to buy him and bring him to New Zealand as a six month old foal.

At 18 months he bred his first mares. His progeny has attracted attention at HOY 2010, where Colgan's Contessa (Appleton x Witzbolt) and Daybreak DHU (Appleton x Sakura Seeking xx) won a reserve championship, and Champagne DHU (Appleton x Matterhorn x Indoctro) a fourth placing.

Appleton's dam is the mare Michigan G, who received the honors of 'keur', a high distinction in the Dutch Warmblood studbook, for excellence in exterior, movement and quality of offspring. Michigan G's sire was the world famous stallion Burggraaf, who was assigned the honors of 'preferent', an even higher distinction.

Burggraaf (Landgraf I x Cor de la Bryère) has produced numerous international show-jumpers, among which Calando, Caletto, Chanel, Contrast and Corlandus. With Roelof Bril he cleared the 2.10 m during the puissance of Indoor Brabant in 1991 and in 1993 they were reserve champion of the 1.40 class for KWPN stallions. Burggraaf also produced offspring with a lot of movement. Examples are the Grand Prix dressage horses Florijn, Louisville and Kingston (Voltaire x Burggraaf).

Appleton's sire is the stallion Rousseau, standing at stud in the United States. Rousseau is owned by Harmony Sporthorses and is among the highest rating dressage stallions in the Dutch Warmblood studbook. Rousseau also carries the predicate of 'preferent'. Rousseau's sire was the dressage stallion Olympic Ferro, who was second at the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000, with Coby van Balen. Rousseau's dam was by the very influential stallion Roemer, which is currently very sought after as an ancestor.
